Audio and Architecture Integrate Seamlessly In Award-Winning James A. Michener Art Museum With HARMAN’s JBL Professional Loudspeakers and BSS Audio Components

Posted on 12:57 by Unknown

Acoustical and A/V design consulting firm Metropolitan
Acoustics deployed JBL AC28/95 compactloudspeakers
with BSS Audio Soundweb London signal processing
at the James A. Michener Art Museum’s Putnam Pavilion.
DOYLESTOWN, Pennsylvania — The James A. Michener Art Museum recently completed the construction of the Putnam Pavilion, a 2,700-square-foot addition to the existing structure that was the recipient of the prestigious 2012 American Institute of Architects (AIA) Philadelphia Gold Merit Award.  With its three 23-foot-high structural glass walls, some of the largest such architectural glass panels in North America, the building’s design is indeed visually striking. In order to maintain the architectural integrity of the space, Philadelphia acoustical and A/V design consulting firm Metropolitan Acoustics deployed HARMAN’s JBL AC28/95 compact loudspeakers with a BSS Audio Soundweb London BLU-100 signal processor and BLU-BIB Break-In Box to overcome some unusual sonic and logistical challenges.

Saben Shawhan, Senior Consultant at Metropolitan Acoustics explained how the building’s unique architecture played a major role in specifying the audio system. “Wherever you have large expanses of glass, you know you’re going to have to deal with the potential for excessive reverberation. Additionally, to give the room a cleaner appearance the ceiling has a series of narrow tracks that are painted black. These tracks house the lighting as well as the sprinkler heads, smoke detectors and rigging points for portable equipment – and the architects also wanted the speakers to be hidden in these tracks.”

The Putnam Pavilion is used for art exhibits, corporate and special events. In addition to background music, sound system uses include support for small musical groups and presentations, so Shawhan needed speakers that would fit in the limited space, and deliver clear, articulate sound with good coverage throughout the space while maintaining a high degree of control. He found the solution in JBL’s AC28/95 compact loudspeakers. “We used 16 of the JBL AC28/95s, which gave us significant output to cover the room. These speakers provide a higher degree of control in the mid-range frequencies than what is available from any other speaker in this size and price range, and the speaker’s 90 x 50-degree waveguide gave us the control over the high frequencies to keep them from bouncing off the glass.”

Because of the varying uses of the facility, audio processing was a major consideration as well, and Metropolitan Acoustics included a BSS Audio Soundweb London BLU-100 12 x 8 signal processor with a BSS BLU-BIB in the system design.  “We expanded the capabilities of the AC28/95’s with the BLU-100’s extensive DSP capabilities, and used a little more processing power than would normally be required in less acoustically challenging spaces. For this installation we needed more than just a simple mixer. We never know where people are going to set up in the room, so we divided the system into six zones that can be operated independently. A user can turn each zone down or off as needed, and this helps with feedback control,” added Shawhan.

“The Putnam Pavilion is a high-end space and expectations were high for sound quality. Because Soundweb London is a comprehensive processing system, it gives us the zone management capabilities we needed for the installation, and enables the speakers to achieve the best possible sound in an acoustically challenging space,” stated Shawhan.

Firehouse Productions Rings In the Holiday Season at Z100’s Jingle Ball 2012 With HARMAN’s JBL Professional Loudspeakers and Crown Amplifiers

Posted on 12:25 by Unknown

Firehouse Productions provided a JBL VTX
line array system and Crown amplifiers for Z100’s
Jingle Ball 2012 at Madison Square Garden.
NEW YORK, New York — When New York contemporary hit radio station Z100 throws a holiday party, it pulls out all the stops—Z100’s Jingle Ball 2012 was held in Madison Square Garden and hosted performances by Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, One Direction, Ne-Yo, Jason Mraz, Cher Lloyd and others. The sellout crowd enjoyed an immersive sonic experience, courtesy of more than 100 of HARMAN’s JBL VTX Series and VERTEC® line array enclosures and Crown I-Tech HD Series amplifiers.

“For Jingle Ball 2012 we needed a system that would provide plenty of power yet have clarity and presence even over an enthusiastic crowd of screaming fans,” said Mark Dittmar, Lead Design and Integration Engineer of Red Hook, New York sound reinforcement contractor Firehouse Productions. “We went all out with a VTX/ VERTECsetup that provided full 360-degree coverage to every one of the 20,000 seats in the Garden.”

Firehouse deployed seven line array columns—two main hangs of 18 VTX Series V25 fullsize line array elements each, two side hangs of 14 VERTECVT4889 fullsize line array elements each and three rear hangs each comprising 12 VT4889’s. Sixteen VERTEC VT4886 subcompact line array elements were used for front fill and 24 VERTEC VT4880A fullsize arrayable subwoofers delivered the low end. All the speakers were driven by Crown I-Tech HD Series amps, with the new 4-channel 4x3500HD powering the center hang.

Firehouse has been relying on JBL VERTEC line arrays for more than 10 years especially in major arena situations. “Along with their superior sound quality and installation flexibility, their focused coverage pattern is ideal for concerts where there’s seating all around the venue and 360-degree coverage is required, yet where the sound has to stay clear, focused and intelligible,” explained Dittmar.

“That said, the JBL VTX Series is yet another sonic step up—the capabilities of the new VTX Series are really quite a step forward. The V25 has so much more low-end power that we didn’t have to fly subwoofers along with the main arrays as we did with the previous Jingle Ball—all the subs were placed on the floor, which meant that we had to hang two fewer arrays in the air, making the installation a little simpler and cleaner.”

“The JBL line arrays and Crown amps are made for each other,” said Dittmar. “The output of the amps can be precisely programmed to match the sonic characteristics of each of the VTX and VERTECspeakers. In particular, the inclusion of the newest VTX and VERTECV5 preset tunings in the Crown amps really took the performance of the loudspeakers beyond anything we were able to achieve before in terms of coverage, coherence, tonal balance and overall clarity.”

“Jingle Ball 2012 was the first time we ever used JBL HiQnet Performance Manager™ software and we wouldn’t have done it if we didn’t have complete confidence,” Dittmar concluded. “Not that a job like this is ever easy, but Performance Manager made doing Jingle Ball 2012 noticeably easier than it had been in previous years.”

Firehouse Productions Does Its Part With HARMAN’s JBL VTX Series Line Arrays and Crown Amplifiers for 12-12-12 The Concert for Sandy Relief

Posted on 06:21 by Unknown

Firehouse Productions provided a total of 82 VTX
line array loudspeakers for 12-12-12 The Concert
for Sandy Relief at Madison Square Garden.
NEW YORK, New York — It was the most significant music event of the year: 12-12-12 The Concert for Sandy Relief, held at Madison Square Garden on December 12, 2012 to benefit the Robin Hood Relief Fund. The concert featured many of the biggest stars in the music industry including Sir Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, Roger Waters, Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, Alicia Keys, Kanye West, The Rolling Stones and many others. The sound for the event was equally stellar, thanks to HARMAN’s JBL VTX Series line arrays powered by Crown I-Tech HD Series programmable amplifiers.

To fill the 18,000-seat Garden, sound reinforcement contractor Firehouse Productions of Red Hook, New York deployed a large JBL VTX Series rig including two main left and right PA columns of 18 V25 full-size line array elements, complemented by two outfill arrays of 12 V25’s, with four VERTEC® VT4886 subcompact line arrays serving as under-hangs. Eighteen S28 and four G28 dual 18-inch cardioid arrayable subwoofers were ground-stacked to complete the VTX installation. All the speakers were driven by Crown IT12000HD power amplifiers with system control provided by JBL HiQnet Performance Manager™ software.

“We had to be completely at the top of our game for this one—although we’ve done many high-profile events, it’s not every day we get to do the sound reinforcement for a concert that’s broadcast around the world to more than a billion people,” said Mark Dittmar, Lead Design and Integration Engineer of Firehouse Productions. “We’d been using JBL VERTEC® line arrays for more than a decade and that product has been spectacular in terms of sound quality, relative light weight and versatile rigging options. That said, with JBL VTX the sound quality we can achieve has gone up a whole other level. VTX sets new standards in clarity and impact, and delivers a consistently smooth and natural response.”

“In fact, the low end from the VTX V25 main arrays is significantly increased—to the point where we’re not flying subs with the system. We stacked the S28 and G28 subs on the ground to give the system additional low-frequency impact but we did not need to fly subs as part of the main array columns as we have in the past.”

“We have used Crown amplifiers ever since we started Firehouse,” Dittmar noted. “The IT12000HD offers us power and flexibility that we can’t get with other products. With the introduction of the VTX line arrays and the newest V5 DSP presets for VTX, the sound quality is spectacular.”

For Dittmar, deploying JBL HiQnet Performance Manager software worked out to be a major benefit. “The JBL HiQnet Performance Manager software makes setting up and controlling the system a lot easier and more accurate. In fact, the 12-12-12 show was only the second time we had ever used Performance Manager – the first being the Z100 Jingle Ball 2012 at the Garden the week before! I’m happy to say it worked perfectly for us,” added Dittmar.

“12-12-12 was one of the most challenging projects we’ve ever done,” Dittmar concluded. “Funny enough, though, the PA turned out to be one of the simplest aspects of the project. Using all JBL line arrays all around the Garden made a huge difference in getting the sound to be consistent throughout the arena, and consistently excellent.”

Acclaimed British Drummer Gavin Harrison Chooses HARMAN’s Premium Microphones

Posted on 07:15 by Unknown
VIENNA, Austria – Acclaimed British drummer and percussionist Gavin Harrison, best known for playing with the progressive rock band Porcupine Tree, has invested in a large set of HARMAN’s AKG recording microphones - including a pair of C12VR's, seven C414's, the new D12 VR kick drum microphone.

Gavin won Modern Drummer Magazine’s readers' poll for "best progressive drummer of the year" for four consecutive years. In 2011, he was voted best progressive drummer by the US DRUM! Magazine and won the 2012 prog drummer award in Classic Rock Magazine. In 2008, he joined King Crimson as part of a dual-drummer lineup with Pat Mastelotto. Last year Gavin was a featured performer on 'The Late Show with David Letterman' as part of their "Drum Solo Week," along with such players as Neil Peart, Stewart Copeland, and Sheila E.

"I used C414's on the last Porcupine Tree studio album at AIR studios when the engineer suggested using them on the toms,” stated Harrison. “I had never tried that before, but was blown away by the clarity and punch the C414's captured. They sound very even across my five toms.”

At his home studio, Gavin uses a pair of C414 XLIIs to capture room ambience, making full use of their nine selectable pickup patterns. Capturing overheads are a pair of factory matched C12VR tube microphones, which Gavin describes as "creamy heaven.”

"By changing the pickup pattern I can effectively change the size and response of the space,” continued Harrison.  “I A/B'd precisely against my previous mics and found the AKG's go way beyond what I had before.”

For the bass drum, Gavin is using the D12 VR – AKG's new generation premium bass microphone that features an all-new ultra thin diaphragm and the original C414 transformer from the 1970s.  With a response somewhere between a vintage and modern upfront sound Gavin says, "it really adds a nice solid punch to my bass drum.”

Gavin concludes, "As a session drummer over the past 30 years I've used AKG mics so many times I've lost count. Since constructing my home studio 15 years ago, I've been paying more attention to the kind of mics that make my drums sound great and AKG provides me with that quality sound.”

AKG is distributed in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland by Sound Technology Ltd.

HARMAN’s Studer Compact Remote Bay Gets Its Maiden Voyage at Colorado Sound Recording Studios

Posted on 14:03 by Unknown

The Studer Compact Remote Bay in action.
WESTMINSTER, Colorado — Colorado Sound Recording Studios is one of the finest facilities in the state. The studio and its remote truck have recorded artists including Norah Jones, Eminem, Steve Miller, Dave Matthews and many others. Recently, the HARMAN Soundcraft Studer truck rolled into Colorado Sound with the new Studer Compact Remote Bay and its latest Virtual Vista software for its first-ever use at a recording session.

The Compact Remote Bay allows access to a Studer Vista digital mixing console’s settings from anywhere in a venue. A little larger than a laptop, the unit has 12 P&G faders, 40 rotary controls and a 19-inch touchscreen running Studer’s Virtual Vista software. In addition to remote operation, the bay may be used to extend the main console’s control surface for a second operator, for monitor mixing or for other functions.

“We used the Compact Remote Bay to record a studio session band to allow Colorado Sound and HD NET and the Mobile TV Group who were also at the session to put the Compact Remote Bay through its paces,” said Rob Lewis, Director of US Sales for Studer. “We put the Compact Remote Bay in the recording studio’s tracking room and interfaced it with the Vista 9 console in the truck to record the piano, bass and drums session band.”

Three stereo headphone mixes, a 5.1 surround and a stereo control room mix were created, all going to the Vista 9 and the Compact Remote Bay with a Studer Stagebox connecting the recording studio feed to the truck via fiber cable.

“As we were getting recording and headphone levels, we tweaked the musicians’ headphone levels with the Compact Remote Bay. Of course everything was really being adjusted via the Vista 9 on the truck, but the Compact Remote Bay made things a lot easier since we could get immediate comments from the musicians and tweak everything right in the room without the need for talkback from the control room in the truck,” Lewis noted. “It worked flawlessly.”

“After we tracked the band we just moved the Compact Remote Bay from the tracking room into Colorado Sound’s main control room and patched in the stereo mix,” Lewis continued. “This allowed the engineers to use the bay and have a feel for the setup’s overall sound quality, dynamics, EQ and so on from the comfort of their control room using their main studio monitors. They were astounded by how we were able to do this without effort, and how easy it was to make patch changes and snapshots without missing a beat.”

HARMAN’s Crown Amplifiers Provide Power and Flexibility In Dale Horton Auditorium at Pensacola Christian College

Posted on 07:26 by Unknown

ELKHART, Indiana – Located at Florida’s Pensacola Christian College, the Dale Horton Auditorium (DHA) recently underwent a complete audio system upgrade featuring HARMAN’s Crown CTs series amplifiers with PIP-BLU programmable input processor cards. The DHA, one of the largest performing arts venues in the Southeast, has a seating capacity of 3,500 and features a stunning interior that artfully blends angular and curved surfaces, fabric and wood and multi-level seating and houses a full working stage and orchestra pit.

“The Dale Horton Auditorium is an absolute gem – with one glaring exception,” said John Fuqua, vice president of Pensacola commercial audio and lighting contractor All Pro Sound. “The sound system was the original one that was installed when the Dale Horton Auditorium was built in 1986. It needed to be completely replaced.”

The facility needed a system that was versatile and could accommodate its wide variety of activities including theatrical and musical productions as well as the college’s own productions, lectures, and worship services. The college uses the DHA continuously for all types of events.

When it came to specifying the amplifiers Fuqua’s team knew they didn’t simply need raw power – they needed flexibility and control. “Crown CTs Series amplifiers with BLU-Link cards were ideal for this application.” Crown CTs amps feature programmable input processor cards that provide BLU-Link functionality. In addition to multiple digital audio bus channels to and from the amplifier, the PIP-BLU card offers an RJ-45 Ethernet jack for remote configuration, control and monitoring and analog input and output connectors.

Twenty Crown CTs 3000, 10 CTs 1200 and seven CTs 600 amplifiers, all with PIP-BLU cards are installed in the auditorium. The amps operate in conjunction with two BSS BLU-160 signal processors with digital audio bus, two BLUCARD-IN input cards, six BLUCARD-OUT output cards and two BLU-BOB2 break-out-boxes.

“The Crown CTs Series amplifiers with BLU-Link cards have remote monitoring and control capability, so we can operate, control power sequencing and configure them from a central location,” Fuqua noted. “We’re using the BSS Audio Soundweb London platform because we already have it deployed in several other areas on campus including the Crowne Centre auditorium, which is another large facility. Using BSS throughout Pensacola Christian College ensures compatibility and familiarity with the equipment and programming by everyone who uses it.” In addition to the Crown and BSS components, a Soundcraft Vi6 digital mixing console is used in the Dale Horton Auditorium for front of house mixing.

“The Crown amplifiers and BSS components work flawlessly together. Actually, the biggest challenge in the DHA installation was the fact that it was labor intensive – we had to completely replace the existing 26-year-old system and put in a new one that was ready to go in the space of five weeks. The result was worth it – the new system is far superior in overall sound quality and speech intelligibility, and the amps are much more adaptable to whatever kind of program they want to hold in the DHA, from a single lecturer to a complete theatrical production,” added Fuqua.

Hofstra University Upgrades TV Studios with HARMAN’s Soundcraft Si Compact 32 Consoles

Posted on 12:26 by Unknown

HEMPSTEAD, New York — Hofstra University is Long Island, New York’s largest private college, offering a broad range of liberal arts and sciences, education, health sciences, law and other courses with full accreditation in 19 academic areas. When the Hofstra University School of Communication finally needed to replace the analog broadcast production consoles in its two TV studios, it chose HARMAN’s Soundcraft Si Compact 32.

“We’d been living with two analog consoles for 25 years!” noted Joseph J. Valerio, Chief Video Engineer. “We were ready for a serious upgrade to our studios. As part of a complete rebuild, we took our time to explore all console technologies and manufacturers and the choice came down to another brand and Soundcraft. We compared them neck and neck at NAB and at a dealer demonstration and the vote was for the Soundcraft Si Compact 32.”

Hofstra’s consoles have 32 mono inputs, though these can be grouped to stereo by linking faders, and two additional stereo line inputs for a total of 36 inputs. The Si Compact 32 also has an AES input and 16 outputs plus an AES out. “Although the board is the smallest in the line of Soundcraft ‘smart’ consoles, it’s the largest model of the Si Compact Si range and has proven to be just right for our needs,” Valerio said.

“We recently used the Si Compact 32 for a very large production in our main studio that involved a band, live audience, a mix for television and the web and a mix for stage monitors,” Valerio continued. “For the first time there was no longer a need for an external console in the studio to mix the band, as we had done in the past. The Soundcraft handles all these mixes at the same time.”

Valerio finds that the Si Compact 32 is well suited for an educational environment. “The students, with some basic training, essentially programmed the configurations and handled all the mixes themselves with no problems,” he said. “One of the students specializing in audio production was glad to see we’d installed this console as he had worked with it at various venues and knew its capabilities.”

“The operating surface has a good clean layout with plenty of indicators to assist the person using the console,” Valerio said. “A simple mix is easy to set up, but so are highly complex mix-minus feeds, mono feeds and groups of busses. You can get very complicated if you need to or want to. Also, the onboard effects are wonderful especially considering they’re genuine Lexicon effects. If you want to, external effects are easily connected—we have a vintage compressor and effects unit.”

“I want to put in a word about the optional Compact Stagebox: outstanding,” Valerio continued. “We connect it with Cat5e cabling to run MADI audio to the board. You can get up to 32 ins and 16 outs although in practice we need some in the control room for monitor functions. The setup was literally plug and play; no fancy tricks needed to be done other than basic board mapping of inputs and outputs.”

“The sound quality is invisible, pristine.” Valerio concluded. “Overall for the money this board is astoundingly powerful and easy to use–a winner.”

HARMAN’s DigiTech New Dirty Robot Synth Pedal for the iStomp™ Offers Sub-Harmonic and Filter Synthesis

Posted on 10:02 by Unknown

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – HARMAN’s DigiTech today announced the introduction of its Dirty Robot e-pedal for its iStomp programmable pedal. The Dirty Robot transforms the sound of a guitar with sub-harmonic and filter synthesis, providing low-end sub-octave and synth-like filter sweeps.

“The Dirty Robot gives guitarists the ability to modify their sound with a wide range of filter synthesis effects that go far beyond the capability of a standard ‘auto wah’-type envelope filter,” said Scott Klimt, marketing manager for DigiTech. “It also enables the player to mix the effected signal with the dry signal to get sounds that range from subtle to outrageously funky.”

The DigiTech Dirty Robot’s Mix, Filter, Envelope and Trigger controls offer enable total control of the pedal’s guitar synth capabilities. The Mix knob blends dry signal with the synth effect. Filter controls the amount of waveform synthesis that is added to the sub-octave signal. The Envelope knob selects the type of filter sweep with both Rise and Fall options and variable time ranges, to create long filter sweeps, classic auto wah sounds, “reverse wah” and more. Trigger controls the envelope sweep sensitivity, for touch-sensitive control of how the effect triggers – the harder the player picks, the more the filter kicks in.

The DigiTech iStomp is a new concept in guitar stompboxes that allows musicians to turn the iStomp into any pedal in the Stomp Shop online pedal store. Offering almost limitless sonic possibilities, the iStomp connects to an Apple iOS device where musicians can use the Stomp Shop app to load it with the e-pedal of their choice. The Stomp Shop is a free app and comes with ten of the most popular requested pedals.  It gives access to more than 40 additional pedals that musicians can browse, try out and purchase, with more pedals added every month.

The DigiTech Dirty Robot e-pedal will be available in December 2012 at an introductory price of $0.99. This introductory price will run for four week. After the introductory period the price will change to $9.99.

The DigiTech iStomp is currently available at $229.95 suggested retail.

New York City’s Legendary Birdland Soars to New Sonic Heights with HARMAN’s JBL Loudspeakers

Posted on 08:00 by Unknown

NORTHRIDGE, California  – New York City’s Birdland is one of the most legendary jazz clubs in the world, an intimate room where aficionados can enjoy the world’s greatest jazz artists in an up-close environment. Perhaps more than most venues, the sound system at Birdland is a vital part of the musical experience. Birdland has taken its in-house audio to new heights with a host of HARMAN’s JBL loudspeakers including six VRX932LAP powered Constant Curvature loudspeakers, a pair of ASB6112 subwoofers, two Control 29AV loudspeakers and six PRX612M powered portable PA speakers used as stage monitors.

“As the engineer at Birdland, the most important thing for me to be able to do is amplify the musicians’ stage performances in the most naturally sounding way so that the system is almost invisible,” said Birdland house engineer Richard Bernard. “The legendary musicians who perform at the club almost always have their own very distinct sound and that’s what people want to hear—‘that sound’.”

A sound system that needed to be heard while not drawing attention to itself was quite a challenge. To achieve this goal, Birdland hung six JBL VRX932LAP loudspeakers directly above the stage facing the audience—two facing downstage towards the main house, two located stage right towards one side of the room and two on stage left facing the rear side of the bar. In addition, two Control 29AV loudspeakers are hung at the far side of the bar, giving total coverage for the room. The two ASB6112 subwoofers are hung downstage on the left and right front corners.

“I’m running the system in mono, and the subwoofers are connected to the spare aux send on the mixing desk, so I’m free to choose which channels I send to the subs,” Bernard noted. “I used to have to mix for the house and the bar would basically get what they would get. That’s no longer a problem as we’ve had many compliments on being able to hear from that side of the room.”

That said, the most noticeable improvement in the system is the level of clarity, Bernard noted. “This is a massive help because the response of instruments and vocals is very true and I’m not forced to just keep turning up an instrument in order for people to hear it—once everything is in its own little pocket in the mix, it just sounds great!”

In addition to JBL loudspeakers, Birdland installed a variety of additional HARMAN equipment, including AKG microphones, dbx processing and Crown amplifiers.
