Wang Chung Keeps Having Fun With HARMAN’s Lexicon PCM Total Bundle
Posted on 08:48 by Unknown
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — If you were around during the 1980s, the song “Everybody Have Fun Tonight” by Wang Chung is burned into your brain. “Everybody Have Fun Tonight” is one of pop’s greatest feel-good anthems. Save for a hiatus in the 1990s the band has continued to tour the world and recently released Tazer Up!, an album of all-new material recorded with HARMAN’s Lexicon PCM Total Bundle as an integral part of the album’s sound.
Wang Chung’s involvement with Lexicon goes back to the early ‘80s when the group was doing its first demos, and has never stopped. “We’ve used Lexicon on all of our recordings, without exception,” said Wang Chung’s drummer Darren Costin, who was there with founding members Jack Hues and Nick Feldman when they were known as Huang Chung. “Products like the Lexicon 224, PCM 60, PCM 70 and MX400 were all a big part of the sound of the bands of the ‘80s and ‘90s and we were certainly no exception!”
Costin noted that all the studios and producers the band was working with back then were on a staple diet of Lexicon hardware because of its total originality, distinctive reverbs and effects and the ability to deliver the right sounds for Wang Chung’s needs. Wang Chung has always used Lexicon for getting dynamic room sounds on drums, or rich Plate and Hall reverbs for strings, vocals, guitars and keyboards.
“The current Lexicon PCM Total Bundle has given us the luxury of keeping up our high professional sonic standards in pre- and post-production at home, on the move, in the studio and all the way through the artistic process to its end goal – a great-sounding record.” Costin finds that with its ease of use and combined reverb and processing plug-ins, the PCM Total Bundle has made the band’s approach to recording much more intuitive and incisive even in the face of a high workload and constantly being on the move. Costin runs the PCM Total Bundle on a variety of cross-platform DAWs including Pro Tools, Fairlight and Logic Pro.
“As a band, we have always insisted upon total clarity in obtaining our goals in the artistic process and the PCM Total Bundle never fails to deliver. For Wang Chung, what separates Lexicon from all its competitors is the total originality of its algorithms and its sonic nuances that cover all the angles. Lexicon was, and still is always our first port of call for getting that distinctive reverb and processing you just can’t get anywhere else,” added Costin.
“It is great to see an iconic pop group such as Wang Chung come back and record a new album and stay loyal to the Lexicon brand that was such an integral component of their original sound is the biggest compliment we can receive,” stated Noel Larson, Market Manager, Portable PA, Tour, Recording at HARMAN Signal Processing.
The Lexicon PCM Total Bundle is designed to work with popular DAWs like Pro Tools and Logic, as well as with any other VST®, Audio Unit™ or RTAS®-compatible platform. Compatible with Windows® Vista, XP and 7 and Macintosh® computers, it offers 14 unique Lexicon reverbs and effects, and hundreds of finely crafted studio presets. Its intuitive user interface provides control of key parameters with a graphical real-time full-color display and flexible sonic customization capabilities.

BSAmedia Chooses HARMAN Soundcraft Vi1 Console as Versatile Hub of New Modular Mobile Setup
Posted on 12:34 by Unknown
UTRECHT, The Netherlands – When Dutch sound engineer Bart Schulz set up his own company, BSAmedia, at the beginning of this year, his main goal was “to deliver a high standard of sound engineering and make high quality gear affordable for everyone.” Having worked as a sound professional for 30 years—including live sound, studio and remote recording, live radio and TV broadcasts—he had recently been training sound engineers while developing broadcast sets and studios in his native Utrecht.
Setting stringent standards of equipment specification, he purchased a HARMAN Soundcraft Vi1 digital console from the company’s Benelux distributors Audio XL to form the hub of a modular mobile unit — knowing that the brand would be familiar to a customer base comprising broadcasters, musicians, recording studios and theatres.
Supplied with Compact Stage Box, a MADI optical card and 100-metre Quad Fibre drum, the Vi1 replaces a previous 16-channel analogue live set-up.
“I can use this as a stand-alone unit for live sound, or combine the Vi1 with a 19-inch recording module for remote recording and music production,” he said. “Alternatively I can connect the Vi1 and stage box with a set of 19-inch broadcast modules to do live broadcasts on location. It is perfect for the market niches that BSAmedia wishes to cater to.”
Bart Schulz has used Soundcraft consoles throughout his sound engineering career, and being active in broadcast is also very familiar with Studer. “The fact that the Vi1 is combining key elements of both brands made it BSAmedia’s ideal desk, suitable for all our activities.”
The reduced footprint of the Vi1 is also a huge advantage—for two reasons: “Most of the time I work alone and cannot physically handle a big console, and secondly, most theatres and other locations where I intend to use my Vi1 are pretty small.”
But prior to making the decision Bart Schulz set out a wish list and surveyed the market options within his budget. He knew the desk needed to be both flexible and versatile—and then a sound engineer friend suggested he contacted Audio XL, who arranged a demo.
“Some of the desks I had reviewed were very good for mixing music but missed broadcast features, and others were very good for broadcasting but unsuitable for music production. There was only one desk that was able to handle everything straight out of the box, and that was the Soundcraft Vi1.
“It was of high quality, with a very good sound, packed with great effects and all the broadcast features like GPIO’s and intercom incorporated into a single package. It seemed like the ideal solution. Although I had done my homework, Martin van Kouwen, at Audio XL answered any other questions and arranged delivery in double quick time.”
Although a newcomer to the Vi Series he says the platform is extremely easy to work with. “I got the Vi1 up and I had it up and running within the hour.”
Once he delved deeper into the Vi1’s attributes he was quickly impressed with the overall layout of the control-surface: “All functions are grouped logically — you instantly know were to look/grab, and FaderGlow® is a useful addition.” He also highlights the layout and ease of use of the Vistonics™ screen, combined with the placement of the rotaries. “This makes for a straightforward approach — just as on an analogue desk — while it packs all the power and benefits of digital.” Finally, he says the Gang Mode and Follow Output Solo Mode are extremely useful additions. “These speed up set-up and operation,” he notes.
“Now it’s time to discover all the extras that the desk’s software has to offer, such as snapshots, cues, and the iPad Remote.”

Radio Sibenik Adds HARMAN Studer OnAir 2500 Console
Posted on 11:46 by Unknown
SIBENIK, Croatia — A new HARMAN Studer OnAir 2500 has been commissioned by the independent broadcaster Radio Sibenik in Croatia.
Radio Sibenik has a long history of using both Studer and Soundcraft equipment since being set up in 1968 as a local radio station for the city of Sibenik. The latest Studer acquisition was specified by the station’s Director of Production, Ante Baric.
Mr. Baric confirmed that the Studer on-air console will form the heart of a new studio, built for broadcast continuity — and designed to feature DJ only, or DJ and announcer, news presenter or guests.
During the acquisition process, he said, the station considered the requirements of their programming and matched this to the available options on the market offering the necessary features. Other considerations included how the desk would be serviced, and whether the cost would be appropriate to the broadcaster’s budget. Studer ticked all the boxes.
Radio Sibenik’s programming is based on news and specialist sports, politics and culture — with lots of pop and easy listening music. They were therefore clear about the features required. “We needed a sufficient number of inputs and outputs (the more the better), endurance and reliability and flexibility of equipment,” said Mr. Baric.
Utilising the same technology platform as the OnAir 3000, Studer’s OnAir 2500 digital all-in-one console provides a new benchmark in ease-of-use for radio broadcast. The control surface, I/O breakout, DSP Core and power supply are all integrated within a single compact chassis, although this had not been one of the pre-requisites for the radio station.
The order was duly placed with Studer dealer, AVC Zagreb, who provided the OnAir 2500 configured with six microphone inputs, three stereo line inputs, two line mono inputs, four stereo AES inputs and a FireWire input. Outputs include a stereo AES PGM output, stereo line output for recording, stereo line output for internet streaming and a further stereo line output for connection with another studio. In addition there is a talkback/monitoring module.
The console takes feeds from microphones, PC with digital multi-channel sound card or FireWire output, CD player, two telephone hybrids and FM tuner for control.
Although the new OnAir 2500 will operate in stand-alone mode the station is considering adding a Studer CMS Lite on-air telephone system for call management at a later stage.
“For now though,” concludes Ante Baric, “I am extremely satisfied with the new console.”
About Radio Sibenik
Radio Sibenik was established in 1968 as a local radio station for the city of Sibenik, with an MW transmitter. In 1972 it began broadcasting on the FM band. In 1985 the station moved into a new building with separate broadcast and production studio — among the equipment purchased were six Studer B67 tape recorders, two Revox PR99 and two Studer 727 CD players. In 1993, they acquired a new Soundcraft SAC 200 mixing console. Since 1996 Radio Sibenik has been equipped with three FM transmitters, broadening its listening base across the Sibenik-Knin County and beyond. In 2011 they relocated again into a new building in preparation for digital broadcasting and operating without any analogue devices such as turntables and tape recorders.

TSS’ Trust in HARMAN’s JBL AWC82 Loudspeakers Pays Off at FedEx Memphis World Hub
Posted on 06:00 by Unknown
NORTHRIDGE, California – Located at Memphis International Airport, the FedEx Express World Hub is the largest and oldest facility in the FedEx Express network, capable of sorting more than 1.5 million packages every day. This “super hub” is so big that it takes up approximately 832 acres—and a recent addition to the package sort facility covers 100,000 square feet of ground and is three levels high. When Memphis systems integrator Technical Support Systems (TSS) got the call to install the new building’s paging and life safety sound system, the company opted for the new HARMAN’s JBL AWC82 full-range all-weather loudspeaker.
Aside from the sheer size of the project, the main challenge TSS faced was that the paging system had to be heard over a noisy environment. It had to overcome an 85dB ambient noise floor in an echo-prone metal building with airplanes and trucks coming in and out, conveyors going all the time and 24-hour a day activity. The system would have to be intelligible at levels over 100dB.
In addition, FedEx management wanted to step up their audio system life safety standards and performance. “The area has had a rash of tornadoes recently and people are more aware of the importance of life safety systems than ever before,” noted Chip Benson of TSS. “Those old-style metal paging horns weren’t going to cut it.”
Benson knew that JBL had recently introduced the AWC82 and that on paper it looked like the ideal solution for its high volume capability, wide coverage pattern and full-range sound. “I had never heard the speaker, but design-wise it looked like exactly what was needed, so I trusted my gut and JBL’s reputation and went with it,” he said. “We were the first to ever take delivery of the AWC82, and delivery was tight—we needed those speakers immediately and they arrived on time.”
TSS installed a total of 100 AWC82 loudspeakers—24 on each of the three levels inside the sort facility and the rest on the outside of the building covering the Hub ramp where the planes arrive. Because of the JBL AWC82’s wide 120-degree coverage pattern, Benson was able to use fewer speakers spaced farther apart compared to previous installations. In addition, Benson and crew hung 20 JBL Control™ 65 P/T pendant speakers in the electrical, mechanical and maintenance shops and installed 40 JBL Control 24CT in-ceiling speakers in a number of offices. The speakers are powered by 13 Crown CTs 2000 amplifiers located in a rack in the head-end in the building’s phone data room.
The speakers and amps are on a 70-volt distributed audio system divided into five zones: sort facility, outside, offices, hub all-call and as Benson calls it, a “bat phone” emergency override. The audio system is tied into the FedEx World Hub’s VoIP phone and paging system, which is linked to all FedEx Hub locations in Memphis. The emergency paging system is connected to FedEx’s meteorology and security departments, which has priority in the event of an emergency.
Another reason the speakers had to deliver better performance is because the paging system is part of the VoIP network. VoIP provides better bandwidth and fidelity than older analog systems and TSS needed speakers that would complement the improved audio quality.
Benson’s gambit in choosing the JBL AWC82 paid off. “Of course, part of me was reluctant to go with the JBLs sight unseen. However, when we first turned on the system we wanted to test their ability to play full-range so we played loud rock music through them. The AWC82 blew away our expectations. In fact, these speakers could be used for foreground fill at a rock concert and I would have no qualms about using them that way.”

HARMAN’S New JBL HiQnet Performance Manager™ Version 1.5 Puts The Power Of One Platform, One Programming Interface And One Point Of Accountability In The Hands Of Live Sound System Professionals
Posted on 06:00 by Unknown
NORTHRIDGE, California — HARMAN Professional today introduced JBL HiQnet Performance Manager™ version 1.5, a significant upgrade confirming the software application as the professional AV industry’s most comprehensive, uniform and useful live sound system configuration and control tool. This newest iteration adds support for more JBL loudspeakers, provides enhanced cardioid subwoofer array support, and broadens the capability to create custom, mixed-model racks of Crown amplifiers.
JBL HiQnet Performance Manager offers touring and performance-venue installation professionals a true workflow-based user experience for designing, deploying and controlling any configuration of HiQnet live performance systems. New to version 1.5 is support for JBL Professional’s VRX Series Constant Curvature loudspeakers, including a new generation of V5 DSP presets providing significant performance enhancements by leveraging the BSS Audio OMNIDRIVE HD™ linear phase FIR processing capability of Crown® I-Tech HD DSP power amplifiers. VRX V5 presets provide dramatic improvements in on-axis and power response due to the use of higher-order asymmetric filters, superior sound quality through the use of arbitrary coefficient FIR phase linearization, and the advanced system protection benefits of Crown’s LevelMAX™ limiter suite. In addition, the refined tonal balance consistency introduced in the new V5 presets makes the VRX Series compatible with VTX and VERTEC® Series V5 processing, allowing VRX enclosures to be effectively used as a fill system complement for tour sound and portable rental applications. The VRX Series V5 Preset Data includes bi-amp (2-way) and passive processing options for VRX928LA, VRX932LA-1 and VRX915M models including 2-way and 3-way options for use with VRX915S and VRX918S subwoofers.
JBL HiQnet Performance Manager also introduces JBL V5 Preset updates for VERTEC Series compact and subcompact models VT4887A/VT4887, VT4886 and VT4883. The new V5 preset release similarly enhances a number of performance attributes of JBL VERTEC VT4887A, VT4887 and VT4886 line array loudspeakers with cardioid subwoofer processing introduced for all VERTEC subwoofers including VT4883, VT4882, VT4881A, VT4880 and VT4880A models. JBL STX Series passive portable PA loudspeakers are also supported in Performance Manager version 1.5, providing an even greater set of sound design tools for complementary fill speaker purposes and medium- to small-format Front-of-House system design applications.
For enhanced configuration flexibility, custom racks can now be designed with mixed Crown amplifier models and can include any number of Crown amplifiers up to a total of eight. Additionally, a new amplifier sleep-mode utility that greatly reduces the system’s AC current draw when not in use can now be controlled through Performance Manager.
Commenting on the launch of JBL HiQnet Performance Manager 1.5, Paul Bauman, Senior Manager – Tour Sound for JBL Professional, noted, “Because Performance Manager is the direct result of customer input and objectives, we are now able to provide the most efficient and goal-oriented software application of its kind. With the embedded system intelligence upon which the Performance Manager user interface is based, it can benefit from ongoing exponential improvements in software technology. Today’s introduction features improvements in a wide array of product areas, backed by our continued commitment to training and support. As we make JBL tour sound products sound better with a new generation of V5 processing, and easier to use in the field via Performance Manager, we are providing our customers with a serious competitive edge while also enabling them to achieve the best possible results.”

Atlantic City’s New Revel Hotel Is Outfitted With Massive HARMAN Audio System Featuring BSS Audio Processing, Crown Amplifiers and JBL Loudspeakers
Posted on 11:49 by Unknown
ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – The new Revel Resort and Casino in Atlantic City has raised the stakes for the area’s luxury hotels—it’s the tallest structure in the city and boasts a 150,000-square-foot casino, 13 restaurants, four nightclubs, 1,900 hotel rooms—and approximately 125 audio/video systems all installed within a 335-day project schedule throughout a sprawling 44-story facility, highlighted by HARMAN’s JBL loudspeakers, along with BSS Audio processors and Crown amplifiers.
“Our firm has successfully accomplished many large-scale projects but this one may be, by far, our largest project to date,” said Tom Knauss, Owner of KMK Technologies, LLC, an Independent Technical Service Provider with offices in south New Jersey and Chappaqua, New York. KMK worked closely with Revel’s prime AV contractor and HARMAN dealer for the project, Total Video Products. TVP is a Top 50 AV Systems Integrator located in Mickleton, New Jersey. Cerami & Associates of New York served as the systems design firm and overall technology consultant to the project architect and Revel ownership. “The project scope included a 25-room technology-rich conference center, approximately 28 meeting rooms, four nightclubs, multiple swimming pools and spas, 13 first-class restaurant venues, high-end hotel suites, an extensive broadcast tie-line system, facility-wide signage systems and background music systems throughout the massive resort property,” Knauss said.
The extensive scope of work was designed and implemented as four major subsystems. Back of House systems include employee dining rooms, conference rooms, meeting rooms, an employee training center and a variety of employee support facilities providing presentation, audio conference, video conference and public address system capabilities. The Front of House systems encompassed the hotel lobbies, indoor pools, outdoor pools, a Sky Garden with magnificent views of the Atlantic Ocean, world-class spa facilities, an upscale shopping mall and other public spaces spread across several floors. Within the hotel tower and high roller suites, designed by Cerami & Associates, KMK and Total Video outfitted two 44th floor Presidential Suites with state-of-the-art entertainment systems.
KMK and Total Video also integrated audio/video systems for the variety of restaurants, nightclubs and entertainment venues throughout the property. Cerami & Associates was given design criteria to ensure commonality in the A/V systems between these different locations, to guarantee easy maintenance from space to space and similar operational subsets within the hotel. “The backbone of each system was the same—including the front of house and back of house, pools areas, roof deck and sky garden,” said Bruce Manning, CTS, Associate Principal of Cerami & Associates. “They are all discrete sub-systems existing within the single main system.”
The signature restaurants include Amada by Chef Jose Garces, the American Cut Steakhouse run by Iron Chef Marc Forgione, a Mediterranean restaurant known as Azure by Allegretti and Mussel Bar & Grille by Chef Robert Wiedmaier. Nighttime revelers can party in four entertainment venues including two that are decidedly out of the ordinary: HQ Nightclub which is spread out over two floors with a large open central dance floor and Ivan Kane’s Royal Jelly Burlesque Nightclub, which features an unusual combination of impressive dance routines and a dynamic live band performing rock and roll cover songs carefully woven with the authentic multi-track recordings by the original artists. High-energy DJ entertainment can be found in and around the Royal Jelly venue and throughout the resort facility on any given evening.
The equipment inventory of HARMAN products is impressive, to say the least. The system features over 650 JBL Control 26CT, 251 Control 24CT and 108 Control 226CT ceiling speakers, more than 150 other JBL loudspeakers and approximately 640 channels of Crown CTs Series amplifiers. Signal processing is accomplished by a decentralized array of BSS Audio Soundweb London processors, including 10 BLU-800, a dozen BLU-80 processors, six BLU-160 signal processors, two BLU-32 CobraNet I/O expanders and a variety of BLU-BIB and BLU-BOB2 break-out boxes. CobraNet audio distribution is accomplished over an extremely robust, owner-provided 10-gigabit network.
“The Revel project was conceived as more of a resort destination than a casino, and the goal was for everything, up to and including the AV systems, to be first-rate,” Knauss noted.
“From a product performance standpoint, a project of this size and the demands of such a rigorous schedule leaves little room for product failure,” Knauss added. “Out of box and early use failures or delivery problems can be devastating to the project schedule, client satisfaction and the integrator’s bottom line. In spite of the vast array of products deployed, no Crown, BSS Audio or JBL products exhibited any level of failure during the system installation or since. Crown CTs amplifiers have provided reliable service on our projects for over 15 years and their performance on this impressive deployment further emphasizes their dependable track record. The BSS Audio components worked perfectly and regarding JBL—there are more than 1,100 JBL speakers in this installation and not one has failed to date.”
“We have successfully accomplished a significant share of system projects across a variety of markets including performing arts, commercial AV, corporate facilities, houses of worship and entertainment facilities such as Revel and we have found BSS Audio signal processing to a reliable, fundamentally sound processing solution for projects of the magnitude of Revel as well as our most basic system endeavors. The importance of that flexibility of scale cannot be understated,” Knauss continued. “On this project we had to interface the BSS processing systems within the hotel’s dedicated IT infrastructure. The owners were insistent regarding the need to maintain a single facility-wide IT network that would successfully integrate and deploy our extensive AV system requirements directly adjacent to and in harmony with, critical data systems serving a 2,000-room hotel, an expansive gaming floor and day-to-day administrative operations. The known difficulties of integrating the AV requirements associated with a system of this size on a multi-task network with such critical and demanding needs was a daunting task from the outset of the project, and directly contradictory to the intentions and recommendations of the project professionals. Our staff, TVP’s DSP designers and Revel’s network integration team, however, successfully accomplished this seemingly impossible task. The BSS products and limited but important factory support helped make this a seamless process.”
“Another major benefit of working with HARMAN products was the serviceability of the HARMAN brands,” Manning added. “Those companies stepped up tremendously and were available at a moment’s notice to provide whatever we needed.”
Cerami & Associates specified a variety of other JBL Control models for Revel’s lobbies, hallways, conference rooms and other areas, as the dispersion provided by the Control 47’s conical Radiation Boundary Integrator (RBI) waveguide made the speaker well-suited to high-ceiling areas. In addition, eight pairs of JBL LSR2328P powered studio monitors were installed in DJ booths throughout several of the first-class restaurants. Rather than typical fixed sources for background music, Cerami’s design included music “workstations” similar to a DJ booth where the venue operators could personally adjust the music programming for the venue throughout the day and evening.
In the end, the system designed by Cerami and installed by TVP/KMK has performed flawlessly. “We dealt with a significant volume of product and if there were any failures in the field and we had to replace any products, I’d know about it,” Knauss said. “With respect to the HARMAN products implemented on this project, that just didn’t happen.”

Godlywood Studios Installs First HARMAN Studer Vista 1 Digital Mixing Console in India
Posted on 16:21 by Unknown
ABU ROAD RAJASTHAN, India – Brahma Kumaris, World Renewal Spiritual Trust has recently constructed Godlywood Studios in its Shantivan Complex at its International Headquarters at Abu Road, Rajasthan. This highly advanced electronic media studio creates television programs and films dedicated to spreading spiritual knowledge and Raja Yoga meditation. This ambitious studio project is intended to create and air various spiritually oriented TV programs and films was conceived and initiated by BK. Ramesh Shah, Managing Trustee of the Brahma Kumari Organization. To help achieve this vision, Godlywood Studios has installed a HARMAN Studer Vista 1 mixing console to serve at the heart of its audio system.
The Brahma Kumaris, World Renewal Spiritual Trust organization is spread over 138 countries with 8,500 centres. Following BK. Ramesh Shah’s vision to create a world-class studio with all functional infrastructure facilities under one roof, the implementation of this project was handed over to Shri. Haridas Bhanushali (BK Harilal). Under the leadership and guidance of BK Harilal, the team executed this project in a short span of one year.
Determined to create a modern facility with world-class tools and equipment, Godlywood studios enlisted a technical committee comprised of BK Shiva, Shashi Mekal and Gerard Goveia of Broadcast Media Equipments Pvt Ltd (BMEPL) along with Ashish Barje, Sales Manager, Recording & Broadcast, HARMAN Professional India. The team selected HARMAN’s Studer Vista 1 mixing console to serve at the heart of the studio, marking the first installation of a Studer Vista 1 in India.
“The Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual Organization [BKWSO] chose the Studer Vista 1 as the perfect fit for Godlywood studios because the primary requirement was that of a compact solution without compromise on system performance, DSP capability or reliability. The Studer Vista 1 enables us to have the control surface, I/O system, DSP and power supplies all contained within one very small footprint console,” said Shashi Mekal, Technical Head, Godlywood Studios.
The BKWSO was also impressed with the Vista 1 for its user-friendly, easy-to-learn interface and unique functionality with its Vistonics™ user interface and 40 on-screen rotary knobs. Using Studer’s unique Virtual Surround Panning, the operator can take mono sources and create a realistic sound field for a film quickly and easily.
The system integration for the project was performed by TASS Services of Mumbai. AVF Distributors, the authorized dealer for HARMAN’s broadcast range, supplied the console to Godlywood.
Commenting on a successful installation, Gerard Goveia, Director, TASS Services, Mumbai, said, “The Studer Vista 1 perfectly fit the bill given the specifications by BKWSO, as well as the budget for the studio’s setup. The Vista 1 sits at the heart of the studio, providing complete control and ease of operation to the technical users.”
In addition to the Studer Vista 1, Godlywood Studios deployed a full array of HARMAN technologies in the space, including three JBL 3730 ScreenArray cinema loudspeakers, one JBL 4642A subwoofer and eight JBL 8320 compact cinema surround loudspeakers. The system is powered with five Crown DSi 1000 and two DSi 4000 amplifiers.
Godlywood Studios also features an audio dubbing studio equipped with AKG C414 microphones and dbx processors, as well as an HD multicam shooting floor that has JBL LSR4326 studio monitors
Elaborating on HARMAN’s legendary expertise in broadcast solutions across the world, David McKinney, Senior Director, India Operations, HARMAN Professional said, “The Studer Vista 1 has proven to be the ideal console for this prestigious installation at Godlywood Studios. The internal 5.1-to-stereo down mix function allows for simultaneous live productions in both formats; this saves a lot of time for the engineers having to redo the mix. Being a successful installation of Studer Vista 1 in India, we are extremely proud of the installation and the team involved has done a commendable job in the project.”

Foothills Christian Church Introduces HARMAN Soundcraft Si Expression to its Congregation
Posted on 08:56 by Unknown
BOISE, Idaho – Foothills Christian Church in Boise, Idaho hosts three weekly services with a full worship band for more than 1,500 active members. To reach all of its members, the church creates live streams of its services via its website. Looking to upgrade from its analog console, Foothills Christian Church recently purchased a HARMAN Soundcraft Si Expression 3 to control its audio system.
Sam Boydstun, Foothills Christian Church Technical Director, needed to replace Foothills Christian Church’s outdated console and sought a way for the musicians and performers to control their own mix. “One of the big things we were looking for was the ability for the musicians and the technicians running the live streaming feed to be able to control their own mix,” said Boydstun. “Having the ability to run the mix from the iPad has been absolutely amazing, that was one of our bigger draws. As well as them being able to control the amount of effects return they get on their individual mixes.”
“I’ve been a big fan of Soundcraft. I’ve worked with the Si Compact Series in the past and I was really pleased with its sound quality,” said Boydstun. “It seemed to be an easy transition for myself and my volunteers from mixing an analog system to get into digital mixing.”
When looking for a new digital board, Boydstun required a console that was easy to use, so that church volunteers would be able to mix on their own. “As far as the use of the Si Expression in the church setting it’s really flexible and it’s a really easy system to teach volunteers and people who have never had the opportunity to be on a digital board before. I’d recommend it to anyone,” Boydstun said.
“The staff and volunteers who have had the opportunity use the Si Expression 3 have given us positive feedback. We’ve also received compliments from the congregation about the sound being much cleaner,” Boydstun concluded.

Firehouse Productions Rocks the Nokia Theatre LA LIVE at 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony with HARMAN’s JBL Loudspeakers and Crown Amplifiers
Posted on 10:55 by Unknown
LOS ANGELES, California – The 28th annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was held on the west coast for the first time in 20 years at the Nokia Theatre LA LIVE in Los Angeles. This year’s inductees included Public Enemy, Heart, Albert King, Randy Newman, Rush and Donna Summer, with Lou Adler and Quincy Jones each receiving an Ahmet Ertegun non-performer award. Sound for this year’s ceremony featured more than 50 of HARMAN’s JBL VERTEC® line array loudspeakers powered by Crown I-Tech HD Series amplifiers.
Red Hook, New York-based sound contractor Firehouse Productions had the Nokia Theatre’s impressive house JBL VERTEC sound system at its disposal, which includes 14 VERTEC VT4889 fullsize line array loudspeakers per side for the main left and right clusters and six VT4889 loudspeakers per side for left and right outfill. To pump out the low end, 22 VT4880A fullsize flown subwoofers are arranged in cardioid configuration, along with eight VT4880A subs per side stacked at the left and right sides of the stage in a cardioid arrangement. The standard house system at Nokia Theater also includes six VT4887A subcompact line array loudspeakers for front fill and even JBL AC2212/00 plus six PD5212/64 loudspeakers for loge and mezzanine delays, respectively.
For the Induction Ceremony, Firehouse Productions added three more hangs of six VT4886 subcompact line array elements each for left, center and right balcony delay clusters and additional VT4886 enclosures for distributed front fill. Audio networking and signal processing was provided by BSS Audio Soundweb London components.
Firehouse has provided the sound for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony before, but this was the first time the company did the event in a proper theater. According to Mark Dittmar, Firehouse’s lead design and integration engineer, Firehouse immediately benefited from a space with good acoustics and a world-class PA system already in place. However, he noted, “With this being rock and roll’s biggest awards night, we wanted a system that would completely blow peoples’ minds for the bands, but maintain good intelligibility for the speeches.” Knowing the Nokia Theatre LA LIVE was already equipped with VERTEC gave Dittmar a feeling of confidence going in, having used VERTEC line arrays for more than a decade for their superior sound quality.
Dittmar has depended on Crown amplifiers since Firehouse Productions began and finds that the I-Tech HD Series offers power and flexibility he can’t achieve with other products. I-Tech HD amplifiers were deployed for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremonies to power the additional VERTEC arrays, along with the original Crown I-Tech amplifiers which power the house PA.
“One of our favorite aspects about Crown is the ability to build a custom library of presets that enable us to control any speaker in our inventory with the proper power and optimize their EQ, delay and other parameters,” Dittmar stated. “In particular, the inclusion of the newest VERTEC V5 preset tunings in the Crown I-Tech HD Series amps really took the performance of the loudspeakers beyond anything we were able to achieve before in terms of coverage, coherence, tonal balance and overall clarity."

The Thunder Audio team (pictured left to right): Paul Owen, Vice President; Tony Villarreal, President; and Greg Snyder, Business Development Manager. |
“This summer is shaping up to be an extremely busy one for us,” noted Greg Snyder, Business Development Manager for Thunder Audio. “We are using the JBL VTX Series on all of these festivals and tours because we feel that it is the best suited for a multitude of reasons.”
The Movement Electronic Music Festival will take place in Hart Plaza in Detroit on Memorial Day weekend and will feature more than 100 of the genre’s biggest artists including Deadmau5, Carl Craig, Moby and more. Thunder Audio will outfit the main Red Bull Music Academy stage with 18 V25 fullsize line array elements per side and four hangs of nine S28 subwoofers on the left and right of the stage, along with six V25 loudspeakers per side for outfill. Sixteen G28 ground-stacked subs will be deployed in a cardioid configuration for front fill, and side fills will include two S28 subs with two V25 loudspeakers on top. The system will be driven by a total of 98 Crown I-Tech 12000 HD amplifiers and connected through dbx DriveRack 4800 loudspeaker management systems via JBL HiQnet Performance Manager™ software.
Rothbury, Michigan’s Electric Forest outdoor music festival (June 27–30) will feature performers in the jam band and electronic music genres including The String Cheese Incident, Pretty Lights, Passion Pit and nearly 100 other artists. For this diverse musical lineup, Thunder Audio will provide 16 V25 line array elements per side for the main left and right hangs and out-hangs of nine V25’s per side, complemented by 12 S28 and six G28 subs per side, powered by 72 I-Tech 12000 HD amps with dbx DriveRack 4800.
The Faster Horses Festival is a 3-day country music and camping festival to be held in Brooklyn, Michigan on July 19–21. The featured artists include ACM Entertainer of the Year Luke Bryan, Dierks Bentley and Jason Aldean who will be joined by Kix Brooks, Florida Georgia Line and many others. The main stage system will include 18 V25 loudspeakers per side, with 12 V25’s flown per side for outfills and 12 JBL VERTEC® VT4888 midsize line array elements used for center and front fill. Twelve G28 ground-stacked subwoofers, 98 Crown I-Tech 12000 HD amps and dbx 4800 processing complete the system lineup.
Marilyn Manson and Alice Cooper will be livening up the summer tour scene with dates from late May through the end of June with an all-VTX system featuring two hangs of 14 V25’s per side and nine S28’s per side on the ground, all driven by 22 Crown I-Tech 12000 HD amplifiers per side. Lynyrd Skynyrd and Bad Company will also be hitting the road this summer and they’ll be packing a VTX system with two left and right main towers with 14 V25 loudspeakers each, along with two out-hangs of eight V25’s each, eight ground-stacked S28 subs per side and 22 Crown I-Tech 12000 HD powering each side.
“One of reasons we’ve used VTX for the past year is the sheer horsepower of the speakers and subs,” Snyder noted. “The extended low-end response of the S28 and G28 is incredible and the clarity of the V25 both outdoors and indoors rises above any other line array out there.” Snyder finds that the 15-inch woofers in the V25 make “a world of difference” and that the capability to change its crossover points from 80Hz to 60Hz enables Thunder Audio to optimize a VTX-based system for rock, electronic, country, jazz or any other type of music.
“After more than a year in the trenches using JBL VTX at a diverse number of events, I feel that VTX is a system that has established itself as something that’s going to set the standard for a long time,” Snyder concluded.

HARMAN’s Soundcraft Si Performer 3 Helps Educate Seven Lakes High School’s Theatre Department
Posted on 09:47 by Unknown
KATY, Texas – Seven Lakes High School has one of the most prestigious theatre programs in the Houston, Texas region, while its Performing Arts Center (PAC) plays host to several school and out-of-house productions each year. The school recently purchased a HARMAN Soundcraft Si Performer 3 digital console for its educational theatre performances and technical theatre classes.
The Seven Lakes Theatre Program rents out its PAC to numerous out-of-house groups because it is widely known as the most professional venue in the area. “Most out-of-house groups rent our PAC because they know we run a professional space and the students I train are professional-grade student technicians that no one will find anywhere else,” said Joshua Heerssen, Seven Lakes High School’s production designer and technical theatre teacher. “Groups continue to spread the word: ‘I want to rent at Seven Lakes’ and even other schools want to come use our PAC for their performances.”
At Seven Lakes High School, Heerssen teaches technical theatre classes, which include hands-on training with everything that entails a theatrical production, including lighting and sound engineering. The Seven Lakes High School theatre program performs four to six large productions a year and shares the PAC with in-house groups, such as the school band or choir, as well as rents to out-of-house groups.
Keeping up with the forefront of technology, Heerssen looked to upgrade Seven Lakes’ analog audio console. “I looked into Soundcraft because we already owned a Spirit 8, so I understood the terminology and I really liked the way Soundcraft consoles are set up,” said Heerssen. “After I saw the Si Performer, I knew it would be the perfect board for our space and a great teaching tool as well.”
Heerssen replaced the PAC’s Soundcraft Spirit 8 soundboard with the Si Performer 3 after attending the TETA (Texas Educational Theatre Association) conference. “I saw the Soundcraft Si Performer on display and demo’d at the conference, and the first thing I noticed were the colored faders, and then to a have digital sound board at this price range with 32 channels of control made me look more intently at this console.”
Heerssen noted the Si Performer’s DMX interface, which allows for lighting control, was a key purchasing factor. “It definitely put a smile on my face when I brought up a channel for lighting on the sound board the first time in our PAC,” said Heerssen.
Heerssen uses the Soundcraft Si Performer 3 for large performances in Seven Lakes’ PAC and as a learning tool for his technical theatre students. “I chose the Soundcraft Si Performer 3 because my goal as a teacher is to make sure students learn the tools that will not only serve them well in college, but what they’ll need for professional theatre,” Heerssen concluded.

UK Production and Songwriting Duo Laconic Chooses HARMAN’s Lexicon Hardware and Plug-In Software
Posted on 08:14 by Unknown
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Ash Milton and Dan Goudie have been close friends since their school days and followed similar paths as professional musicians ultimately finding their way into the studio. Today that work together continues as one of the UK’s premier production and songwriting teams, Laconic. The duo works with well-known UK pop bands creating albums, EPs and songs, using HARMAN’s Lexicon 480L and PCM Native Reverb Bundle.
“We've been using Lexicon for around 10 years and in every studio we've worked in there have always been Lexicon products,” said Ash. “Lexicon effects always seem to give us real depth but tend not to muddy a mix in the way others might. Having the option of both hardware and software that we can rely on and is also easy to use means we can focus on the music.”
Laconic’s recent work includes the Barbados/UK band Cover Drive, whose first album saw great success in 2012, producing three top-10 singles in the UK (including a No.1). Laconic is also working with X-Factor’s District 3 on its debut EP as well as bands from ITV’s The Big Reunion. The guys have previously worked with Lawson, Katy B and The Saturdays and collaborated with companies such as Sony and Amnesty International on ad campaigns and computer game music.
Although the PCM Native Reverb Bundle offers seven exclusive Lexicon reverbs and effects and hundreds of studio presets, Dan is drawn to the Vintage and Chamber plates. “The sound is so smooth. It’s great that Lexicon reverb hardware units and the software bundle cover all bases but don’t skimp on quality. It’s all of the highest standard,” said Dan. “We love the vintage plate, especially on vocals. We’re also big fans of the chamber plate, which we prefer on guitars and synths as it gives us a more unique character.”
“Laconic’s diverse production portfolio is a testament to just how versatile the Lexicon hardware and software can be in studio applications. We appreciate hearing about long-term users such as Laconic having successfully transitioned from our hardware to software platforms because they believe in the sonic integrity of our reverb plug-ins,” stated Noel Larson, Market Manager, Portable PA, Tour and Recording for HARMAN Signal Processing.
The Lexicon PCM Native Reverb Plug-In Bundle is designed to work with popular DAWs like Pro Tools and Logic, as well as with any other VST®, Audio Unit™ or RTAS®-compatible platform. Compatible with Windows® Vista, XP and 7 and Macintosh® computers, it offers seven unique Lexicon’s plug-ins including Vintage Plate, Plate, Hall, Room, Random Hall, Concert Hall and Chamber, along with hundreds of presets including classics from Lexicon’s extensive library of sounds.

HARMAN’s JBL Professional Named Official Speaker Provider for The American Pavilion at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival
Posted on 06:46 by Unknown
NORTHRIDGE, California – HARMAN’s JBL Professional today announced that it is the Official Speaker Provider for The American Pavilion at the 66th Cannes Film Festival, which takes place May 15–26 in Cannes, France. The American Pavilion is the center of activity at the Cannes International Film Festival for the American film community, offering membership for professionals, provocative and insightful programming, immersive student programs, the Emerging Filmmaker Showcase and more.
JBL is providing four CBT 70J-1 column loudspeakers for The American Pavilion, which is located within the International Village. Because of the CBT 70J-1's studio-grade drivers and JBL's exclusive CBT pattern control, the loudspeakers provide the American Pavilion with superb sonic fidelity and even coverage throughout the space. The system includes four JBL CBT 70J-1 column loudspeakers instead of the 20 distributed loudspeakers that had previously been considered.
The CBT’s "Asymmetrical Progressive Gradient Coverage" sends more sound to the far area of the listening space than to the close areas. This allows sufficient sound to reach the far listeners without overwhelming listeners that are positioned closer to the loudspeakers.
The very wide 150-degree horizontal coverage allows more area in the pavilion to be covered from fewer loudspeaker locations and to ensure that off-axis listeners still hear the same quality of sound as on-axis listeners. Two of the speakers are located at the edge of the tent area, allowing them to also cover the listeners on the deck, who were not covered in previous years. In addition, the low-profile design of the CBT Series provides the pavilion with world-class sound while maintaining a visually discreet appearance.
With the ability to cover the area with fewer speakers, the entire system is driven from a single powered mixer, as opposed to the complexity of a rack system. With the power available from the existing powered mixer, each speaker is powered with 125 Watts.
“We are honored to be named as the Official Speaker Provider for The American Pavilion at Cannes,” said Brian Divine, Director of Marketing, JBL Professional. “JBL has a storied history in cinema, and this year attendees at The American Pavilion can look forward to enjoying the powerful, immersive and nuanced sound that JBL is known for.”
"We are thrilled to have the cutting-edge technology that JBL Professional brings to the table, which will give our members a sound experience beyond compare for all our programming this year," said Julie Sisk, Founder of The American Pavilion at Cannes.
