HARMAN’s Soundcraft Launches “Mixing with Professionals” Program for Si Series Consoles

Posted on 11:48 by Unknown
NORTHRIDGE, California – In response to popular demand, HARMAN’s Soundcraft has launched a new “Mixing with Professionals” program for its Si Series of digital mixing consoles. Building on its successful program for the Vi Series, these “Mixing with Professionals” sessions will offer fully hands-on training, focusing on Soundcraft’s Si Expression and Si Performer consoles.

“Mixing with Professionals” Si Series training sessions will be held throughout the United States and hosted by factory-trained Soundcraft sales representatives. Guest engineers will join them to share their experiences with Soundcraft consoles and to provide additional training. These 3-hour sessions will follow a classroom format of six “stations”, with one to four people per station, working on either an Si Expression or Si Performer console.

“Our ‘Mixing with Professionals’ training programs have been so overwhelmingly popular that, combined with the success of our Si Expression and Si Performer lines, we have received considerable demand to expand our training to include these products,” said Katy Templeman-Holmes of Soundcraft Studer. “Training is free and open to anyone wanting to learn, or to more advanced users looking for additional tips and tricks to get the most out of their Si consoles!”

Anyone interested is invited to register online at http://usa.soundcraft.com/mwp/events.aspx or navigate to the Events Calendar at http://usa.soundcraft.com/mwp/events. Guests are asked to bring their own headphones to the sessions (mini or ¼”).

UCLA’s Historic Pauley Pavilion Upgrades With HARMAN’s BSS Audio and JBL Loudspeakers

Posted on 06:57 by Unknown
NORTHRIDGE, California – Building on the rich heritage of UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion and providing a new level of entertainment for students and fans, Los Angeles-based Pro Sound & Video recently upgraded the audio system, part of a $125 million renovation to the arena. Acoustic Dimensions served as acoustical consultant for the project, which includes HARMAN’s JBL Professional Precision Directivity™ (PD) series loudspeakers, BSS Audio Soundweb London signal processing and Crown CTs Series amplifiers.

Pauley Pavilion, which opened in 1965, is the on-campus home court to the UCLA Bruins men’s basketball, gymnastics and volleyball programs, as well as a campus landmark which played host to the 1984 Olympics, a 1988 presidential debate and renowned entertainers including Frank Sinatra. With 38 NCAA championship teams across the various programs, the venue’s history speaks for itself.

The design process was conducted over a 20-month period, while the renovation included the addition of modern amenities with a new center-hung video display and new speaker system for the arena seating, concourses and restrooms, with AV systems for the new team meeting room, player lounges and Stadium Club.

The total installation included eight JBL PD5212/64 loudspeakers for main long throw, eight PD5212/64 loudspeakers for main short throw arrayed above the four corners of the scoreboard and 32 AM7212/95 main delay loudspeakers installed in a delay ring around the arena seating, underneath the upper seating level. Additionally, two VP7212MDP floor monitor speakers were provided for courtside use, 29 Control 26CT ceiling loudspeakers installed in the arena’s premier seating Pavilion Club, and 30 Control 24CT MicroPlus compact in-ceiling speakers installed in the writing and press area of the arena.

“We have used the JBL PD5000 series boxes on previous projects and like the way it sounds. With its tonal quality and high output capability we determined it was a good design choice. Add to that fact that JBL’s headquarters are right down the street from the University, we knew that it was the right speaker for the arena” explained Brian Elwell, Senior Consultant and VP of Acoustic Dimensions.

A total of three Crown CTs600 amplifiers power the systems 70V speakers, with an array of BSS BLU-800, BLU-160, BLU-16 and BLU-32 being used for digital signal processing as well as a BLU-10 controller for level control and mutes of the various speaker systems.

“This was a fairly simple system to install, except for one main challenge,” explained Joe Byrne, Operations Manager, Pro Sound & Video. “With trapezoid cabinets such as the PD loudspeakers, it made it difficult to hang the boxes from the stadium roof. There is no easy way to have the speakers seismically arrested and would have required a huge amount of wired rope installed between the speakers and the ceiling. It looked chaotic on paper.”

“We needed a ridged frame system to cut back on the wire strung in the rafters so we developed a square structural steel frame in which the loudspeakers could hang inside and be seismically arrested to the frame itself,” Byrne said.

With the addition of a large new ribbon and LED scoreboard, the sonic quality of the JBL PD Series loudspeakers complemented the system quite well. “With a ring of delay speakers underneath the upper seating level, the coverage is great,” Byrne continued.

The great longstanding relationship between Pro Sound and HARMAN gave Byrne and his team the confidence in installing a full JBL, and BSS Audio system. “We’ve never had any issues with the audio system when we know we have HARMAN products deployed. With years of experience, we know that the system will be reliable and help reinforce the UCLA tradition within the arena.”

Norway’s TV2’s Journey Accomplished with HARMAN’s Studer

Posted on 07:24 by Unknown
OSLO, Norway – Ever since TV2 in Norway purchased its first HARMAN Studer mixing console in 2005, Norway’s biggest commercial TV channel has enjoyed a strong relationship with Studer and Norwegian Studer distributor LydRommet AS. The ensuing series of Studer purchases and upgrades demonstrates TV2’s ability to protect its investment with high-quality, efficient solutions.

The Bergen branch purchased an OnAir 3000 digital mixing console in 2005 and another one in 2010. It also added a Vista 8 console in 2007. The Oslo branched added two Vista 8 consoles and a Route 6000 system in 2006, while adding an OnAir 3000 console in 2007. In 2009, TV2 was one of the very first in the world to implement Studer’s I/O sharing system, RELINK, between the two Vistas, the router and the OnAir 3000.

In 2012, the Bergen location upgraded its first OnAir 3000 to SCore Live, doubling its DSP capability as part of rebuilding the news studio. This year, the OnAir 3000 in Oslo received the same treatment, when it was time for that studio to upgrade its facilities. In addition to the SCore Live upgrade, the OnAir 3000 in Oslo received additional I/O capability, and a desk extension.

Since The TV2 news channel is on air roughly 18 hours a day, I/O capabilities were enhanced in order to receive MADI signals directly from the video router, instead of relying on the routing system. This enables service and software upgrades to be completed on the router even when the news channel is on air.

TV2 invests heavily in system automation. For example, with its Mosart playout system, TV2 controls the OnAir 3000 consoles via the Studer Monitora protocol. This gives the engineer the freedom to work on sound quality, camera and lighting, without worrying about opening the right fader at the right time. In Oslo, the engineers are controlling the studio microphones from the console extension, before sending the feed to an audio group that is controlled by Mosart. Also, with the implementation of the EMBER protocol in the Vista 4.9 software, Bergen now controls even the Vista 8 consoles with Mosart.

And it continues, as TV2 Bergen is now installing a 22-fader Vista 5M3, which will network with the Vista 8 over RELINK.

“The relationship with TV2 exemplifies more than just one customer’s commitment; it also shows how the Studer platform enables customers to protect their investments,” said Espen Andersen of LydRommet AS. “TV2 is a technology-driven broadcaster constantly seeking better and more efficient solutions, and all the way the Studer mixing systems easily adapt through software and hardware upgrades.”

FOH Engineer Bruce Jones Gets Joe Cocker By With A Little Help From HARMAN’s AKG

Posted on 08:19 by Unknown
VIENNA, Austria – Joe Cocker’s European tour stretched from France and Germany to Croatia and Monaco, as the band performed for sold-out crowds in numerous cities. On stage, FOH engineer Bruce Jones needed to ensure fans’ favorite songs of the band were clearly audible, in addition to maintaining a durable equipment rig. A complete HARMAN AKG microphone set traveled with the band, quickly deployed every night.

“I was looking for a clean, crisp sound, but also a system that could handle high sound pressure levels and work in any weather condition,” stated Jones. “If the artists aren’t happy with their sound, you’re wasting everyone’s time. Since deploying AKG for our shows, the entire band has said the sound is better than ever before!”

Included in the rig are AKG D7 and D5 handheld microphones, D40’s, D212’s, D12 VR’s, C451’s and C519’s. The durability and reliability aspects are key in the continued use of AKG for Cocker, according to Jones, who hasn’t had one failure under in any situation.

“With today’s accurate sound systems, you have to have the best,” Jones continued. “The mics bring high fidelity sound to my mix – I can get the whispers of singers audible in even large arenas. Any weakness in the line will show up and AKG, without question, gives me the best sounding shows I’ve ever had.”

Film Composer John Powell Loyal to HARMAN’s Lexicon PCM Total Bundle

Posted on 14:01 by Unknown
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – British-born, Los Angeles-based John Powell has been an A-list film composer since the 1990s for his ability to perfectly set the musical tone of a movie whether dramatic, playful or any mood in between. Powell has been a long-time Lexicon user, from the beginning of his career to his most recent use of the Lexicon PCM Total Bundle Plug-ins package His numerous credits include How to Train Your Dragon (1, 2 and 3), X-Men: The Last Stand, Happy Feet, The Bourne Identity and more than 50 other live-action and animated films.

“I’m much older than you’d think from looking at me,” Powell stated with typical humor. “When I first started working in recording studios the jewel in the crown for me was always the Lexicon reverb, way back to models like the 224, 224XL, 300, 480L and 960L. Back then many of these units were incredibly expensive and the idea of owning one was just a dream for me.”

Fast forward to 2013 and the Lexicon PCM Total Bundle Plug-ins package, which offers more than a dozen Lexicon reverbs and effects and hundreds of studio presets. Thanks to the PCM Total Bundle, the equivalent of dozens of rack-mount hardware units are now available to composers, musicians, engineers and producers at the click of a mouse.

“Being able to have as many Lexicon reverbs as I want, right there inside both my Logic and Pro Tools rigs is an extraordinary turn of events,” Powell noted. “Their reverbs always add the most musical sheen, that, to me, makes everything sound more euphonic and even harmonically richer.”

To say Powell is happy with the Lexicon PCM Total Bundle’s sounds, capabilities and flexibility would be an understatement as he asked, “Can someone please hand me a tissue?”

“To be lucky enough to work with someone like John Powell and to know we had a small hand in bringing his talent to the screen is a tremendous honor and privilege,” added Noel Larson, Market Manager, Portable PA, Tour and Recording for HARMAN Signal Processing.

The Lexicon PCM Total Bundle is designed to work with popular DAWs like Pro Tools and Logic, as well as with any other VST®, Audio Unit™ or RTAS®-compatible platform. Compatible with Windows® Vista, XP and 7 and Macintosh® computers, it offers 14 unique Lexicon reverbs and effects, and hundreds of finely crafted studio presets. Its intuitive user interface provides control of key parameters with a graphical real-time full-color display and flexible sonic customization capabilities.

Adapt Deploys HARMAN’s Martin RUSH MH 3 Beam For East Coast House Party

Posted on 10:04 by Unknown
AARHUS, Denmark – The East Coast House Party was the ideal outdoor nightclub environment with a high-tech lighting design by Swedish event company Adapt. Held yearly, the East Coast Party is an open-air event held in Östhammar, north of Stockholm. Deployed throughout the entire venue by Adapt event planners, HARMAN’s Martin RUSH Beam MH 3 lighting fixtures created the ultimate party scene.

“We had plenty of reasons to choose the Martin RUSH Beam over other lighting fixtures, but in short, RUSH lighting provided the long distance reach we required with the stage setup,” stated Viking Grandin, Senior Project Manager, Adapt. “RUSH’s small fixture size, high output and narrow beam capabilities allowed us to shoot out over the 5000-capacity crowd and the dance floor without any brightness issues.”

Adapt placed 16 of the Martin RUSH Beams on the stage floor and above a backdrop Martin LC-Series LED wall to create the spectacular effects. The rig also included a Maxedia Compact, numerous Atomic 3000’s, Jem Roadie Compact and an M6 console.

”The speed and the many possibilities of the RUSH Beam made it ideal for this type of club event,” Grandin continued. ”In just one fixture we had a tight beam, frosted beam and a flower effect. This made the lightshow very flexible and ever-changing.”

Founded in 1987 and headquartered in Aarhus, Denmark, Martin Professional is a world leader in the creation of dynamic lighting solutions for the entertainment, architectural, and commercial sectors. CANDLEBOX Lead Guitarist Peter Klett Discovers HARMAN’s DigiTech Hardwire Pedals

Posted on 06:00 by Unknown
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Peter Klett, lead guitarist of the Seattle, Washington based band CANDLEBOX, has been with the group since its inception in 1991. CANDLEBOX’s career spans five studio albums and one live record. CANDLEBOX creates a style of hard rock with an eclectic mix of influences from blues to punk and 70’s rock and roll. Klett recently began using HARMAN’s DigiTech Hardwire pedal line and has been putting them to the test out on the road.

Klett is confident in the HardWire line. It is built to endure the most demanding touring conditions and will last through all the rigorous travel that a touring band goes through. “I knew about DigiTech but I only recently started using the HardWire pedals. I was able to really dig in and try these pedals out on the road,” explained Klett. “I was sold on them almost immediately. You know the first time you hold one that they are a well-built product.”

The feature Klett finds most useful is the ‘Stomplock Knob Guard’. “Its really important when a guitarist has a specific setting on the pedal they don’t want to lose during the packing and unpacking of the pedal board.”

Currently using the Tube Overdrive through both his dirty and clean chain, Klett separates the dirty channel from the clean with a pan pedal using separate amplifiers. “The Tube Overdrive is great through the clean channel to give it a slight bite. It’s especially good for our song ‘Rain’,” commented Klett.

Klett also uses the Tremolo/Rotary, the Stereo Reverb, and the Stereo Chorus pedals. By utilizing the extensive built-in settings, he is able to achieve any sound he and the band are looking for. While running the Stereo Chorus and the Tremolo/Rotary through the clean chain, the Chorus provides Klett with more width. In addition, Klett also runs the Reverb pedal through his clean chain and finds it impossible not to achieve the tone he needs with all three pedals.

Klett has aspirations to become a producer. He wants the challenge of bringing out the best in the artist and he expects the same from his gear. “The build and the options. I look for the care that goes into providing the best possible product. A lot of musicians have limited resources and can only afford one pedal at a time. With the DigiTech HardWire line you know you are getting the most for your hard earned money.”

HARMAN’s Martin MAC Viper Beam – High Intensity Beam with Zoom!

Posted on 06:45 by Unknown
AARHUS, Denmark — HARMAN’s Martin new MAC Viper Beam is a unique beam fixture with linear zoom system that projects a very narrow pencil beam of high-intensity light. The final fixture in the award-winning MAC Viper Family, it is available as an easy-to-install front lens replacement kit for any standard MAC Viper AirFX.

Ideal for high-impact, big beam effects and longer throws, it houses the same high-quality feature set as Martin’s MAC Viper AirFX, including a vibrant color mixing system and stunning aerial effects. It has also inherited the same compact form, impressive speed and superior light quality using the same 1000 W source as the other Viper Family luminaires.

Tighter beam – higher intensity

With 80 percent greater intensity than the MAC Viper AirFX, the MAC Viper Beam can cut through all forms of ambient lighting. Its linear zoom - a unique feature for a beam luminaire – creates a tighter beam and the auto-linked focus means that hard-edge effects hold their focus throughout the entire zoom range and at varying throws. Beam gobos can adjust along the entire zoom range and unlike other fixtures, light output is constant with no visible beam jump from tight to wide.

The MAC Viper Beam houses a selection of all-new aerial effects on two gobo wheels – a rotating gobo wheel with five replaceable designs and a fixed gobo wheel with seven designs. The CMY color mixing system offers a superior palette including true reds, rich ambers, primary green and deep blues with added color choice from a 7-slot color wheel. A linear CTO provides daylight to tungsten CCT control and expansion of the CMY palette.

Beams can be manipulated using a combined dimmer/shutter with intensity effects for instant blackout or smooth fades all the way to blackout. Additional effects are possible from a fast and tight iris with adjustable dynamic effects, as well as a frost that can snap or fade in for beautiful hard-edge or narrow-angle wash effects. Various strobe effects are also possible.

The MAC Viper Beam is available as an easy-to-install front lens replacement kit for any standard MAC Viper AirFX. The lens kit installs (and uninstalls) in only a few minutes with no need to change internal parts. For the lighting designer this means another great lighting tool while the rental house benefits from added flexibility and enhanced value for their MAC Viper AirFX portfolio.

HARMAN’s Studer Now Offering Popular Broadcast Academy Sessions Online at StuderBroadcastAcademy.com

Posted on 08:13 by Unknown
POTTERS BAR, United Kingdom – HARMAN’s Studer is proud to announce that its Broadcast Academy training course for Studer consoles is now available online at StuderBroadcastAcademy.com. The popular and informative training program has been previously held in the United States on the Soundcraft Studer mobile audio truck, which has visited numerous locations of Studer regional sale rep firms and flagship Studer customers in recent years.

StuderBroadcastAcademy.com is an interactive online course for engineers worldwide to learn the operation of the company’s Vista Series digital mixing consoles. The course consists of a series of modules, which participants must complete and pass 100 percent to officially certify as a Studer Vista Operator. The course is structured in an interactive format and students can download the Virtual Vista software that gives them a graphic, active representation of a Vista console. Virtual Vista can also be used for offline console configuration and online remote control of Vista mixing consoles. Video segments, system and technical diagrams, a dictionary of terms and other resources round out the program.

StuderBroadcastAcademy.com has been developed in partnership with the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences (CRAS), one of the world’s premier audio recording, sound engineering and music production schools. In addition, many of the broadcast industry’s leading sound engineers provided input and guidance in the development of StuderBroadcastAcademy.com.

“In bringing the Studer Broadcast Academy online, we can now offer audio engineers and industry professionals worldwide access to the same training, education and resources we have provided to those who have attended our in-person sessions,” said Katy Templeman-Holmes, US Marketing, Soundcraft Studer. “StuderBroadcastAcademy.com further demonstrates our commitment to industry education and giving users the tools they need to succeed in the real world of pro audio mixing.”

Once they have completed the course, engineers have access to all the teaching materials as often as they need, to refresh their knowledge and to use as an on-the-job aid when working on a Vista console. Certified Vista Operators are also welcome to attend subsequent hands-on training sessions (locations will be announced on StuderBroadcastAcademy.com) to further their skills. In addition, certified operators can opt to be listed on the Studer website in a searchable database that sound contractors and industry pros will be able to access.

“Having been involved in the development of StuderBroadcastAcademy.com, I can say with 100 percent certainty that this is the first online program of its kind for the broadcast audio community,” said Patrick Smith, Head Audio Engineer for NBC’s The Tonight Show. “The curriculum is comprehensive, the content is engaging and the lessons progress at a natural, increasingly sophisticated pace.”

HARMAN’s JBL VTX Line Arrays and Crown I-Tech HD Amplifiers Star in 2013 Sunset Strip Music Festival

Posted on 06:00 by Unknown
LOS ANGELES, California —The epicenter of rock music on the west coast will find you on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, California and at no time of year is the iconic street louder than the annual Sunset Strip Music Festival. Featuring artists such as Street Drum Corps, Finch, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Awolnation and headlined by Linkin Park. Escondido, California-based Sound Image supplied a HARMAN JBL VTX system powered by Crown I-Tech HD amplifiers for the festival which took place on August 3rd, 2013.

The system Sound Image deployed for the festival featured 24 JBL VTX V25 full-size line array elements (12 per side) along with four VERTEC® VT 4887A compact line array elements for front fill, 18 VTX S28 subwoofers (nine per side) and eight VTX G28 subwoofers in a single cardioid array. Crown I-Tech 12000 HD amplifiers powered the entire system.

“The VTX line arrays are a huge step forward sonically. It’s very smooth and the low-end is tighter and you have more headroom at the high-end as well. Plus using JBL HiQnet Performance Manager™ Software is extremely straight forward and intuitive,” explained Rich Davis, Audio Engineer for Sound Image.

Considering the time crunch, the combination of the Crown-powered VTX system used in conjunction with Performance Manager made the entire production far more efficient. “This was a one day festival and we didn’t have the ability to do load in the day before. We were onsite at 3:00am and once the stage was in place we had everything set-up quickly. Paul Bauman from JBL had visited the site and done some preliminary work and then it was just a matter of refining some of the angles and the distance we needed to throw. Being able to do everything from assigning the amplifiers to tuning the PA with delay times in the software is a major time saver,” added Davis.

For headliners Linkin Park, the difference in the VTX rig is unquestionable. “My favorite PA out there is the JBL VTX. At the high-end it really shines, there is no distortion and its capabilities are unlike anything else that is out there right now, when I’m out with Linkin Park it’s our first choice,” added Ken “Pooch” Van Druten, FOH Engineer for Linkin Park.

Sunset Music Festival’s Head of Production, Phil Jaurigui, explained how this was a unique year for the festival. “After years of using JBL systems for smaller staging applications, I was overjoyed by the sound and performance of the VTX system for the main stage at the Sunset Strip Music Festival,” he said. “It was not only twice as loud than the previous system we have used that fit into the same footprint, it also had a punch that was clear and noticeable even two blocks away. This performance has made me a firm believer in large-scale JBL touring rigs forever.”

“We are extremely pleased to be specified on Linkin Park’s technical rider and it was a pleasure to support them on this event. Ken Van Druten always does a fantastic job in making the VTX system sound great! Rich Davis and the Sound Image crew did a great job as always in ensuring that everything ran smoothly and the VTX system performed flawlessly. In particular, the EDS cardioid subwoofer array provided excellent onstage rejection - something that is important to the band members of Linkin Park - while providing high impact out front combined with very even horizontal coverage without any power alley issues whatsoever,” stated Paul Bauman, Senior Manager, Tour Sound for JBL Professional.

“Swing House has produced the Sunset Strip Music Festival since its inception six years ago and building a large-scale street festival on Sunset Boulevard in just under 12 hours is an almost impossible task,” Jaurigui added. “However, with the great team of Sound Image, DPS and Bartles International Group all working jointly with us along with the addition of the JBL VTX system, it came off without a hitch and was the best-sounding and best-looking show we have ever presented.”

David Perry Puts HARMAN’s Soundcraft Si Expression 3 to the Test

Posted on 10:04 by Unknown
BUFFALO, New York – Professional audio engineer David Perry recently purchased a HARMAN Soundcraft Si Expression 3 mixing console for use on a variety of regional events. A member of Buffalo, New York-based systems integration firm Ronco Specialized Systems and freelance broadcast engineer, Perry has already put the Si Expression 3 to the test this summer, using it for a variety of functions, including music festivals, corporate events and “Taste of Buffalo,” the second-largest food festival in the United States.

In addition to his position as Shop Manager with Ronco, Perry works as a freelance broadcast engineer for CBS Sports and NBC Sports, handling a lot of golf and football telecasts. “I’ve been doing sound since I was 13 years old and I still love working on all kinds of projects,” he said.

In May 2012, Perry purchased a Soundcraft Vi1 console, and his positive experience with the Vi1 compelled him to purchase the Si Expression 3. “I was predominantly an analog guy until I bought the Vi1,” Perry said. “I bought MADI cards for the Vi1 and added a mini CAT5 snake as well. I really loved the quality and ease of use of the Vi1.”

To date, Perry’s experience with the Si Expression 3 has been equally positive. “Out of the box, using the Si Expression was a snap,” he said. “I plan on adding a mini stagebox to the console as well to give me even more flexibility.”

“You really can’t beat the Si Expression: the footprint is small and it’s equally ideal for use at front-of-house and for monitors,” Perry concluded.

ESS Audio Promotes HARMAN’s JBL VTX Line Arrays Through Busy Summer Season

Posted on 08:27 by Unknown
WARSAW, Poland – ESS Audio, HARMAN Professional’s distributor in Poland, is midway through a busy summer festival season with HARMAN’s JBL VTX line arrays, highlighted by the recent Heineken Open’er Festival at Gdynia-Kosakowo Airport on the North Coast. Organized by concert agency Alter Art, Heineken Open’er Festival is one of the biggest festivals in Poland (and the third largest in Europe), with 50,000 attending the 4-day festival daily.

ESS Audio’s customer—rental company, GMB Pro Sound—took responsibility for equipping the main stage, using their new JBL VTX system. They fielded a total of 64 V25 fullsize line array elements, with the main front-facing PA comprising 18 elements per side. This was supported by outfills (in hangs of nine) and downfill enclosures, complemented by 48 G28 subwoofers in a broadside reverse cardioid array. Four VERTEC® VT4889 fullsize line array elements were added for near-field coverage and a further 24 VT4889 were used for delays further down the field.

The entire system was powered by Crown I-Tech 12000 HD and Macro-Tech MA5000 amplifiers, while the company dipped further into its HARMAN Professional inventory for digital control. Four Soundcraft Vi6 digital consoles were deployed for use by the FOH and monitor engineers for internationally-famous acts such as Rihanna, Blur, Steve Reich, Arctic Monkeys, Editors, Skunk Anansie, Nick Cave, Queens of the Stone Age and Kings of Leon.

Earlier in the month, GMB Pro Sound had again fielded its premium JBL VTX system for the main stage at Orange Warsaw Festival, held at the National Stadium, Warsaw, and this year featuring Beyonce, Fatboy Slim, Basement Jaxx, Tinie Tempah Offspring and Cypress Hill. Since the Festival began in 2008 it has grown to become one of the country’s most important events, televised by commercial network TVN.

The same company also supplied a pair of Soundcraft Vi6 digital consoles for the Top Trendy Festival at Opera Leśna in Sopot (close to Gdynia). Organized by television station, Polsat, the event is divided into two sections: ‘Top’ presents the 10 most popular artists in Poland while ‘Trendy’ presents emerging artists, who participate in a talent show. Viewers voting by SMS chose the winner, with the prize a Polsat TV appearance.

For this event sound coverage was provided by 30 V25 line array elements and 18 G28 subwoofers, each driven by a Crown VRack system, supplemented by a further four VERTEC VT4880 arrayable subwoofers (powered by Crown Macro-Tech MA5000), eight VERTEC VT4887 compact line array elements and four VRX932 Constant Curvature loudspeakers on fill duties—all assigned to Crown I-Tech 8000 amplifiers.

Finally, in the south of the country, the National Festival of Polish Song is staged and broadcast annually at the Millennium Amphitheatre (Amfiteatr Tysiąclecia) by TVP, Poland’s national broadcaster. One of the two most important music festivals in Poland, the Opole festival reflects the past year's achievements by Polish song writers and performers, incorporating hits of the previous season with new songs and performance debuts (including a tournament).

For this event, GMB Pro Audio fielded 18 VRack-powered JBL V25’s, along with 12 SRX712M monitors and a pair of Soundcraft Vi6’s—one at the stage and one at FOH.

Summing up, the challenges of getting so many large VTX systems out to so many major events, ESS Audio director, Witold Karalow said, “Poland is a great place to see how versatile and powerful the JBL VTX system is. We have been able to cover the four biggest and most famous festivals in the country with JBL line arrays—presenting totally different music genres, from rock and pop thru classical, R&B and club music.”

AVI Event Services Bolsters Inventory with HARMAN’s Soundcraft Si Expression 2 Console

Posted on 12:56 by Unknown
FORT WAYNE, Indiana – AVI Event Services is a technical service provider for corporate events and professional venues based in Fort Wayne, Indiana. While the company is responsible for setting up audio/video systems for these events, AVI’s sound engineers had been seeking the right audio mixing console to complement its policy of exceeding client expectations. AVI’s search recently culminated with the purchase of a HARMAN Soundcraft Si Expression 2 console.

According to Todd Fiechter, Sound Engineer/Specialist at AVI, the company began considering purchasing a digital console in early 2012. “We knew we would have to make the transition to a digital console soon,” he said. “However, digital was still pretty expensive at the time, and we were more experienced with the feel and layout of analog consoles.”

Equipment managers like Fiechter can rest assured knowing that the Soundcraft Si Expression series offers a unique combination of digital performance (recallable settings) and analog user experience. The Si Expression 2 features 24 recallable mic pre amps, four line inputs, four internal stereo FX returns, AES in, and a 64x64 expansion slot offering more than enough scope to use every one of the 66 input processing channels. All controls are dedicated to a specific function, so not only are they never layered to avoid hassle; they can also be labeled like traditional analog mixing boards.

“During a recent medical industry conference, we were responsible for a live satellite feed, a broadcast of live surgery and podium microphones. For all the tasks, the Si Expression 2 performed perfectly,” according to Fiechter.

The Si Expression 2 not only provides superior digital performance at a decent price, it also combines effects and processing into its compact form factor. “The amount of external gear the Si Expression 2 saves us is amazing; we use a lot of compression and the EQs are great,” Fiechter said.

According to Fiechter, the features of the Si Expression 2 are perfectly suited for customer-oriented professionals like himself: “Since the events we do have similar setups (video playback, PowerPoint, etc.), we plan on using the Si Expression 2 for every show. It really fits the events we do and our options for expansion down the road.”

Farber Sound Powers North Dakota State Fair with HARMAN’s Crown VRACK Amplifier Systems

Posted on 06:00 by Unknown
(left to right): Dave Farber, President, Brian Rivard, System Tech,
Cory Deming, Production Manager, Brian Pickowitz, Business
Segment Manager, Crown Audio.
MINOT, North Dakota — Great. Big. Fun. That’s how the North Dakota State Fair bills itself, and this July it lived up to its name with rides, rodeos and concerts by Tim McGraw, Journey, Scotty McCreery, Toby Keith, Brantley Gilbert and other acts. Featuring a grandstand that holds up to 16,000 people, Minneapolis, Minnesota audio production company Farber Sound has handled sound reinforcement at the North Dakota State Fair for the past five years, and this year decided to step up their game with a system based around HARMAN’s Crown VRACK amplifier systems.

VRACK is a complete, transportable amplifier management solution that includes Crown I-Tech HD Series amplifiers, analog and digital connections and a globally universal power distribution system, all housed in a wheeled rack with a captive suspension system that enables VRACK to be flown in the same manner as a line array loudspeaker system.

“From being a VERTEC® house for the last nine years the move to Crown VRACKs was a smooth transition,” said Farber Sound owner Dave Farber. “We wanted to upgrade to the V5 presets for the VERTEC loudspeakers that are available for the I-Tech HD Series amps used in VRACK. Although the decision to make the investment wasn’t easy, the V5 capability and the other advantages we get from VRACK made it a logical move for a tour sound company like us.”

The system Farber Sound brought to the North Dakota State Fair included four VRACK 4x3500HD racks, each including three I-Tech 4x3500HD 4-channel amplifiers, and three VRACKs with three I-Tech 12000HDs in each. The VRACKs powered two main left and right hangs of 16 JBL VERTEC VT4888 midsize line array elements each, along with 32 JBL SRX728S subwoofers arranged in eight groups of four and eight VERTEC VT4886 subcompact line array elements used for front fill. The team used JBL HiQnet Performance Manager™ software, along with JBL’s Line Array Calculator speaker modeling application, to configure and control the system from front of house.

“Things went as smoothly as can be using VRACK,” said Farber. “Everyone was very happy with the rig.” Farber also likes VRACK’s ability to operate on different voltage levels at the flip of switch and notes that its AES/EBU connections along with VDrive make it a very flexible package. “I have consistency in my inventory and can simply buy more VRACKs when we are ready to expand.”

“The wow factor of Crown VRACK and Performance Manager is impressive. It’s amazing how much you can do with a simple click,” Farber stated. “The capacity this offers for what we might be able to do going forward is very exciting.”

HARMAN’s Martin LEDs Blossom at Sweden’s Summerburst Festival

Posted on 17:52 by Unknown
STOCKHOLM, Sweden — As some of the world’s most pronounced DJs took the stage at the Sweden Summerburst Festival, a team of lighting professionals designed and managed a complete HARMAN Martin lighting display, highlighting artists such as David Guetta, Sebastian Ingroso, Axwell, Steve Angello, Alesso, Steve Aoki and Hardwell, among others. Deployed by Westridge Audio AB, the Martin system was required to have enough power to shine brightly and effectively during both day and night performances.

Music & Lights AB supplied 72 Martin MAC Aura’s, 12 MAC 301 Washes and 62 Atomic 3000 strobes for the festival’s two, 2-day events in Göteborg and Stockholm.

“The MAC Aura did an amazing job at the Summerburst Festival,” stated Production Manager Daniel Rüdén. “The brightness of the fixtures and lenses are very usable during daylight and when the sun set, the zoom beam was almost as strong as the beam fixtures next to it!”

Rüdén described his struggle with weight limitations on tours and during festivals, but with Aura’s lightweight construction, the lighting team was able to provide more lighting options and fixtures, while keeping functionality at a maximum. “We were able to hang trusses with fixtures between the LED panels on each side of the stage. The Martin Aura was small and effective, allowing us to move the trusses closer together and create great visuals for each performance.”

Tobias Borén, Lighting Director for the festival since its inception in 2011, was given free reign to put his final touch on the festival’s lights, choosing the best fixtures to suit the EDM music during the festival. The final combined design between Rüdén and Borén’s visions were underscored by the Martin solution.

“It was an easy choice for us – the MAC Aura is by far the best LED wash fixture on the market, due to its brightness and light weight,” Rüdén continued. “Tobias also designed some great custom rain covers for the Auras, which allowed us to concentrate more on the show than the weather conditions.”

HARMAN’s Martin Certified Authorized Economic Operator

Posted on 16:40 by Unknown
AARHUS, Denmark — HARMAN’s Martin is now certified as an Authorized Economic Operator (AEO), a counter-terrorism and global trade certification, and part of the World Customs Organization’s framework of standards to Secure and Facilitate global trade (SAFE).

AEO Certification benefits include easier access to customs simplifications and facilitation with regard to customs controls relating to security. Certification also puts the company in a more favorable position to comply with any new security requirements. Economically, transportation costs fall as trade goods are made available more quickly. Society as a whole benefits as well through a safer, more secure trading of goods.

The growth of global trade and increasing security threats to the international movement of goods have forced customs administrations to increasingly shift their focus to securing the international trade flow. Through the AEO Certification, Martin has proven to have high-quality internal processes in place that will prevent goods in international transport to be tampered with and has met the following criteria: customs compliance, appropriate record-keeping, financial solvency and appropriate security and safety standards.

Additionally, Martin’s headquarter facility in Aarhus, Denmark, and factory in Frederikshavn, are now counter-terrorism secured according to the AEO Certification regulations.

As a world leader in the creation of dynamic lighting solutions for the entertainment, architectural, and commercial sectors, Martin lighting and video systems are renowned the world over. Citylight Supplies HARMAN Martin MAC Lighting For “The Voice” Spain

Posted on 06:00 by Unknown
AARHUS, Denmark — Drawing an immense following since its debut in September 2012, reality television singing competition “The Voice,” or “La Voz,” in Spain, has become a social phenomenon. To help accentuate the live performances, live drama and the jury of popular Spanish singers: Rosario Flores, David Bisbal, Malú and Melendi, Madrid-based full-service rental, sales and installation company Citylight installed a complete HARMAN Martin MAC lighting rig.

Citylight Lighting Designer Julián Perez’s lighting design includes an abundance of Martin products including MAC III Profile, MAC 2000 Profile and Wash, MAC TW1, MAC 600 NT, MAC 550, MAC 250 Krypton, MAC 250 Wash and MAC 250 Beam luminaires, as well as Martin Stagebar 54 L battens and Atomic 3000 strobes. The upcoming 2013 season will also incorporate more than 30 of Martin’s new Rush Strobe 1 5x5 effect lights.

Perez has been especially impressed with the Martin MAC III Profile. “Thanks to the MAC III’s power, incredible gobos and zoom system we could get a great range of well-defined beam effects or cover big areas, even when using high rates of conventional lighting. It also comes with a great electronic shutter that creates instant effects without the need for complex programming.”

Perez continued, “The MAC 250 Wash/Beam surprised us with its two types of projection - the wash, which we used in different productions with great results, and a beam that proved to be amazing throughout the production that very much impressed our colleagues.”

For Photography Director Ángel Blanco, the tungsten-based MAC TW1 wash light was a great addition to the set. “Thanks to the versatility of the MAC TW1 we were able to illuminate and color different scenarios in shades not all luminaires can reproduce, and in a reduced period of time with no need to redirect conventional lighting equipment,” Blanco stated. “We could even use the projectors, especially in live shows, to replace traditional Fresnel lighting equipment in case a lamp failed. They adjusted perfectly to the color temperature and flow of the projector if they needed to be replaced.”

“We chose Martin projectors because they are reliable and versatile,” said “La Voz” Lighting Director Juan Carlos. “They have easily adapted to changes in the seven months of production and three different program formats. We’ve also received excellent technical service from Martin representatives in Spain.”
